KEYNOTES SPEAKERS

Professor Kiyoshi Kiyokawa

I am a Professor at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, since 2017. I received my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in information systems from Nara Institute of Science and Technology in 1996 and 1998, respectively. I was a Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1998. I worked for Communications Research Laboratory (current National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT)) from 1999 to 2002. I was a visiting researcher at Human Interface Technology Laboratory of University of Washington from 2001 to 2002. I was an Associate Professor at Cybermedia Center, Osaka University from 2002 to 2017.

My research interests include virtual reality, augmented reality, human augmentation, 3D user interfaces, CSCW, and context awareness. I have been involved in organizing IEEE and ACM conferences, such as IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR), IEEE Virtual Reality, IEEE International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC), IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), and ACM Virtual Reality Software and Technology (VRST).

Dr. Veronica Costa Orvalho

I envision a world where technology retains it humanity.
I am a dreamer and an optimist engineer. Fascinated by the many ways in which people communicate, learn and share knowledge, led me to discover a new way to interact and scale our presence in the digital era instilling trust and empathy in digital communication. I did my PhD in Computer Graphics in Barcelona many years ago. I am a professor at Porto University and the Founder and CEO of Didimo. I recently gave a TEDx talk to over 1000 people, received the Women Who Tech Award in New York and the IBM scientific award. My inventions have been used by Universal Studios, Sony, Microsoft, Amazon and European and Portuguese research funded projects.
I love to be outdoors and talk with people, random people, close friends, everyone. I like creating new things, inventing and going beyond what my imagination can envision.

My everyday life motto is: breath, learn, learn, learn, observe and then share.

Specialties: software development, algorithms, physical simulations, geometric deformation, video game development and design, 3D visualization, facial modeling, facial animation, facial rigging, facial recognition.

Dr. Mark Melnykowycz

I've worked in the academic and industrial research areas in the United States, Switzerland, and Japan on extended projects including biomaterials, smart materials, automotive engineering and various topics within composite materials. My work approach includes a mix of analytical thinking and research methods combined with an artistic flexibility to develop unique solutions.

I embrace the lean startup philosophy of developing products and business case iteration combined with user experience testing to build software that fulfill user needs. Currently I'm developing wearable sensor technologies and story immersion mobile applications using location-based storytelling and augmented reality technology to combine the magic of books with the local environment of the user.

Specialties: Project management of technical and creative topics. Materials science and engineering, specifically with composites and smart materials. User experience and interaction design, mobile technology, mockup layouts. Digital art, photography, video production. Artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine vision, autonomous vehicles, etc.

Dr. Roderick Mc Call

Lead Researcher with around twenty years' experience in a variety of research organisations and universities in Germany, Luxembourg and the UK. Core themes within these are augmented and mixed realities, human-computer interaction, serious games and behaviour change technologies (mobility and energy). A major part of my work involves mixed realities and HCI for security-related topics, e.g. radiological incidents, terrorism and crime. Other recent work is exploring behaviour change approaches to help ease energy poverty. A key motivating factor for me is to take basic research ideas from the lab to industry.

Example of some current or very recent projects:
* H2020 SAYSO - PI @LIST.
* H2020 PasCal - member of LIST team.
* H2020 TARGET - project technical coordinator.
* FNR CORE-INTER MADSAV - PI@LIST.
* H2020 TERRIFFIC (PI@LIST).
* H2020 STEP-IN (PI/coordinator).
* FNR Pathfinder - TARGETplace (PI).
* FNR Proof-of-concept - STARRI (PI).
* FNR Pathfinder - RISAR (PI).

Since 2011, I have attracted around €6m in funding from the EU, FNR and industry. Most recent funding coming from the EU (6 H2020 applications accepted). Prior to being at LIST I founded the IGNITE (Interaction, Games and Novel Interface TEchnologies) research collective at the University of Luxembourg, which was part of the SECAN-Lab research group.

Aside from work I am a bit of a current affairs and theatre junkie.
