Here is a list of all the Oculus Quest software which supports controller-free hand tracking, as well as developers who plan to support it once they have access to the SDK next week.
The software development kit (SDK) for Hand Tracking isn’t available yet, so there are no third party apps supporting Hand Tracking yet. Facebook says to expect the first apps from developers to support the feature in 2020.
Oculus Avatars won’t support Hand Tracking next week, but Facebook told us this is targeted for next year. This will allow developers to add hands matching the user’s actual skin tone by default.
We will amend this list over time as more apps and games start to support hand tracking and we hear from more developers who plan to support it.
If you’re a Quest developer with an app already available from the Oculus store and think it likely you’ll support this feature, please email [email protected] to get yourself added to this list.
Supported Already
The Menu
The Oculus Quest main menu, as well as all associated panels such as the Settings, supports controller-free hand tracking.
This includes the Library and Store, so you can launch and purchase apps (as long as they support Hand Tracking). It also includes the Gallery, so you can browse and view your screenshots and other media.
Oculus Browser
This means you don’t need the Touch controllers to simply browse the web anymore.
Oculus Browser supports services like YouTube, Twitch, and Netflix, so you can watch video content in this way, before the official Quest apps for these services support Hand Tracking.
Oculus TV
Oculus TV is Facebook’s hub for video content, both regular videos and immersive 360 content.
The platform supports services like FandangoNOW, ESPN, Sling TV, Showtime, and FOX NOW. This means you can watch those services now without Touch controllers.
Planned Support
The following apps plan to support Hand Tracking once the SDK releases. Keep in mind however that unforeseen issues may cause this to not in fact happen:
Bigscreen
Bigscreen lets you watch TV shows, movies, and other screen based content on a shared virtual screen with friends or strangers all over the world.
Bigscreen has a spatial UI built around pushing buttons with the index finger, which will be an interesting departure from Facebook’s pointing implementation of Hand Tracking.
Titans of Space PLUS
Titans of Space is an educational app which brings you on a tour of the solar system and beyond.
The app is currently listed on the Quest store but hasn’t released yet. Hand Tracking will not be available at launch, but is planned for later.
The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets
The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets is a miniature scale nostalgic puzzler where you explore the miniature worlds you and your grandfather imagined when you were a child, to help solve the titular mystery.
Fast Travel Games told us it is “looking into” Hand Tracking, and that it the game will “very likely” get support.
Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop lets you wirelessly use your PC or laptop on a virtual monitor inside VR. This means anything your PC can do you can do inside VR.
The developer told us that he will start working on Hand Tracking once the SDK releases, but warned that it will take “some time” before it would be released.
Waltz of the Wizard
Walt of the Wizard is a magical showcase of room scale VR and hand based interactions.
It’s set inside a castle where you can play with ingredients to make spells and more.
