Epic Games Acquires Cloud Computing Company Cloudgine

Epic Games, the company behind popular VR-compatible videogame development engine, Unreal Engine, today announced that it is to acquire cloud computing company Cloudgine for an undisclosed sum.

Since its inception in 2012, Cloudgine has focused on delivering powerful performance to interactive content, including VR, from the cloud. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, the company has already been using Unreal Engine 4 to deliver next-level visuals, complex physics and other features that could make the virtual worlds we visit with headsets much closer to the real thing. The short video below tells you a bit about how it works.

Though Epic didn’t announce specific plans for the company today, you can expect to see Cloudgine become tightly integrated with Unreal Engine in the coming years, which could drastically reduce the requirements of PCs and consoles running VR hardware. Epic usually puts on a big show at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March, so perhaps we’ll learn more about its plans there.
