Atari is a brand that, to its credit, refuses to die. Many of the most prolific gaming brands from the 70s and 80s have fallen to the wayside, vanished, or rebranded to the point of obscurity, but Atari has done an admirable job of staying at least somewhat relevant in the wake of Nintendo’s eventual domination of the console gaming market several decades ago.
Nowadays the legendary gaming company is leaning heavily on nostalgia with things like the Ataribox and continued milking of the Rollercoaster Tycoon IP. As a result, the company’s first VR title is none other than Rollercoaster Tycoon Joyride.
The PS4 exclusive title will be “enhanced” for PSVR as an optional feature, but will be fully playable outside of VR. This also marks the company’s first foray into the real of immersive gaming.
We don’t know anything else about the game at this time, but we should have the chance to go hands-on with it during GDC 2018 next week. Previous entries in the long-running series have players building and managing a theme park of their very own, which would be a great fit for VR.
Other rollercoaster-focused sim management games have released with horrible results in VR, but hopefully the quality and polish that Rollercoaster Tycoon is know for can carry through here.
