Community Download is a weekly discussion-focused articles series published every Monday in which we pose a single, core question to you all, our readers, in the spirit of fostering discussion and debate.
Last week we asked you what your dream VR game would be, which is a rather future-focused question, so instead this week let’s look back at the last few years of consumer-focused VR and reflect on things we’ve already seen.
When I think back to my favorite video games and movies I don’t usually think about the experience as a whole, but instead my mind drifts to specific moments that stand out. Aragorn’s speech at the end of Return of the King, when Neo first dodges bullets in The Matrix, or the twist ending revelation from Fight Club that still sends chills down my spine. On the gaming side I think about when I first exited the sewers in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and saw the sprawling land of Cyrodiil laid out before me or when I first pulled the Master Sword out of its pedestal in Ocarina of Time. All of those great works are defined by their iconic moments.
So, I put it to you: What are your favorite and most memorable VR moments to date?
For me, I think it’s going to take a very long time to top that feeling of sheer awe I first felt when standing on the edge of a cliff in The Lab, looking out at a photo-realistic mountain range, or how amazing it felt to stare down the throat of a fire breathing dragon in Skyrim VR. Or lets not forget the first time you had to duck and take cover, physically, when playing Onward.
Let me know which moments stick out for you down in the comments below!
