Rubin: Marvel Was ‘Somewhat Unconvinced’ By VR Collaboration At First

There are plenty of VR games left to enjoy this year, but Marvel Powers United VR has to be the game we’re looking forward to playing most in 2018. The chance to become some of our favorite Marvel heroes inside the Oculus Rift is just too promising. Interestingly, though, it took publisher Oculus Studios a while to convince Marvel of that.

Speaking to Fast Company, Oculus VP of Content Jason Rubin explained that Marvel was initially “somewhat unconvinced” by the idea of a VR game. “You know, VR is new,” Rubin explained, “is this something they want to do? They’re very precious about their IP.”

Oculus persisted, however, and Marvel continued to decline. Then the game’s developer, Sanzaru Games, got involved. According to the report, Sanzaru built a demo starring Marvel characters using its own money. Oculus took that demo to show Marvel, and the company suddenly became very enthusiastic about the project.

“People love these characters,” Rubin said of what ultimately swayed the company. “Cosplay aside, you don’t really get to be that character in a world. This is a first. This is something no other medium can give you.”

That brings us to where we are today. Marvel Powers United features four player co-op between friends that get to embody some of the brand’s most iconic characters. Right now we know that Rocket Raccoon, Captain Marvel, Hulk, and Deadpool are joining the fray, but we’re eager to see who else is on the roster.
